Valentina Arango wins
Latino Book Award



Eighteen years old Colombian-American writer, Valentina Arango, won the International Latino Book Award for Best Young Adult Nonfiction in English, with her book “Memories of my Colombia”. The award was presented on May 25, 2010, during BookExpo America, at the Javits Center in New York.

“Memories of My Colombia” is an account of Valentina’s relationship with the place where she was born, Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), and it is also the story of her return, almost ten years after having left. Valentina came to the United States with her family, in 1998, when she was six years old. Her book tells also the story of the difficulties that she and her family faced during their adaptation to a new life; it is also a reflection on her increasing sense of belonging to the United States. For Valentina, Cartagena de Indias is the place of her earliest memories, and a place which taught her many lessons when she returned to visit; the United States, on the other hand, is the place that now she calls home. Valentina lives in New Jersey, where she is a high school student.

“Memories of my Colombia” was published by Ediciones El Pozo, and released last year during the IV New York Book Fair Expo, at the Queens Museum of Arts. The Latino Book Award was created in 1999 by Latino Literacy Now, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes literacy and literary excellence within the Latino Community. The program is supported by the Latino actor, Edward James Olmos. After winning this Award, Valentina Arango will present her book at The Latino Book and Family Festival, in Los Angeles.

La escritora colombo-americana de dieciocho años, Valentina Arango, ganó el “International Latino Book Award” en la categoría de Mejor Libro Juvenil de No-ficción en inglés, con su texto “Memories of my Colombia”. El premio fue presentado este martes 25 de mayo, de 2010, en el marco de la BookExpo America, en el Javits Center de Nueva York.

“Memories of my Colombia” habla de la relación de Valentina con el lugar donde nació, Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) y narra su retorno, casi diez años después de marcharse. Valentina llegó a los Estados Unidos con su familia, en 1998, cuando tenía seis años de edad. El libro habla también de las dificultades de ella y su familia para adaptarse a una nueva vida, y es una reflexión sobre su creciente sentido de pertenencia a los Estados Unidos. Para Valentina, Cartagena de Indias es el lugar de sus memorias más tempranas, un lugar que le enseñó muchas lecciones cuando volvió a visitarlo; los Estados Unidos, por otro lado, son para ella el lugar al que ahora llama hogar. Valentina reside actualmente en New Jersey, donde estudia el último año de high school.

“Memories of my Colombia” fue publicado en octubre del año pasado por Ediciones El Pozo, de Nueva York, y fue presentado durante la IV New York Book Fair Expo, en el Queens Museum of Arts. El Latino Book Award fue creado en 1999 por Latino Literacy Now, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que apoya y promueve alfabetismo y excelencia literaria en la comunidad latina. El programa cuenta con el apoyo del actor latino Edward James Olmos. Después de recibir este galardón, Valentina Arango presentará su libro en el Latino Book and Family Festival, que tendrá lugar en Los Angeles, en octubre próximo.
